After nearly a year of investigation into the Sandy Hook School shooting, Connecticut authorities issued their final report and closed the book on the case. But the findings remain inconclusive. The evidence showed that 20-year-old Adam Lanza carefully planned the horrific crime, right down to his own suicide when the police arrived. But he never gave any indication of what he was planning or why. It’s just one of those dark mysteries of the human mind that we may never be able to understand. Whenever there’s a tragedy like this, from a school shooting to a terrorist act, we have a tendency to point fingers of blame, to think that if only someone had connected the dots, it could have been prevented. The truth is that there are a lot of dots out there, and sometimes it’s impossible to connect them until the connections become obvious. That’s why connect-the-dots games come with numbers attached. And why all the billions of random phone records collected by the NSA have yet to help them identify and percent a single act of terrorism. Some things are only clear when you see them in hindsight.
