After seeing RG3s injury yesterday, I feel like I should point - TopicsExpress

After seeing RG3s injury yesterday, I feel like I should point something out that might have people poke fun at me, but there are so many other ways to already do that it probably wont matter. So here goes. Being an athlete does not mean you are athletic. Ever hear the quote learn how to fall properly? RG3 is an amazing athlete, that sometimes looks amazingly unathletic. Remember William Refrigerator Perry? Not exactly thought of as an athlete, but an extremely athletic guy. I remember a clip of him doing box jumps on like a 46 box. Now that seems like a weird comparison. But since the preseason they have made comments about teaching RG3 to slide at the end of his runs. I mean he looked just plain ridiculous trying to slide. Something you dont even think about as hard in most cases. I started taking my son to speed and agility classes a few years ago, in my mind to be a better athlete. Faster, quicker, more explosive etc. What I noticed right away, is how much they do not work on those types of drills as much as you would think. Taking off in an athletic position. Planting in an athletic position. Cutting. Jumping. Landing. Dear god the landing. Aidan has stepped onto a box and stepped off and landed in an athletic position probably a thousand times. Strengthening and conditioning his body to get used to these movements and impacts was something I never even thought about when we started, I just new he needed some help I could not give him. Seeing an injury like RG3s really brings it in to perspective though. Training and getting bigger, stronger, faster, does nothing if your joints and tendons cant support it. Mike Ditka was asked once if he would draft Brian Bosworth. Hell no he said, small wrists and weak ankles. That was 25 years ago and it makes perfect sense now. Make sure your young athletes are getting the proper training they need at a young age.
