After signing over Billy the ABD yesterday, it is only apt that I share this post about labelling dogs again. Why? Well, a week before he was due to go out to his new home, I was subject to behaviour from Billy that left me sporting a very nasty looking bite wound to my forearm and indeed, one of the puncture marks, after my arm went through all the colours of the rainbow, has left a scar. Did it phase me? Did I panic and demand that he be PTS? Not at all. I took the bite, I dealt with the issue and I reflected on the incident with a level head. I knew that he was not coping well in the kennels and I made some mistakes that go against what I would tell you about handling this type of dog. As I result, I got what I would have advised another me, was fairly inevitable. The question was raised to me, well what are we going to do with him now? and I was in no doubt that I knew where his head was it, I knew why he did it and I also knew that a repeat of this behaviour was going to be very unlikely when he went into a home environment and in the event that I got it wrong and it did, the owners were well equipped to deal with it. Of course they were shown the wound and given the option of retracting their interest, they declined. As a result of the faith in my knowledge and the perseverance and confidence of his new owners, as you will have seen from yesterday, he has been signed over after a faultless 3 month trial period. How many dogs die every day because situations like this are misunderstood? Its a scary thought. There are some truly dangerous dogs but they are few and far apart. This is what makes DRRH very different from your average rescue. Ian
