After some minutes the impala disappeared from sight into a thick clump of trees. Undaunted, the juvenile once more launched herself, this time from the branch where she was sitting and followed the buck into the thicket. I was left to curse the absence of light and the fact that down here in Natal we have abdicated certain territorial claims to the green mamba. In fact, only three weeks ago while I was photographing the juvenile and giving my laymans patter on Crowned eagles to three visitors from the Karoo who were on holiday at San Lameer, a green mamba, thicker than a firemans hosepipe and long enough to straddle a country road, passed by on the ground not ten meters from were we were standing. Were it not for the fact that we were all sober and that I had witnesses, I would have attributed the sighting to a touch of the sun. Anyway, here is the juvenile in launch mode from elevated base.
