After sweeping the Normal CornBelters in a three-game series on the road, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, did not find the same success in Marion, Illinois as they fell to the Southern Illinois Miners by a final score of 4-2. Michael Carden earned the win for the Miners, while Scott Dunn suffered the loss. Southern Illinois wasted no time in gaining a lead against Washington with RBI singles credited to shortstop Ryan Cavan and designated hitter Frank Martinez in the bottom of the first. The inning could have been bloodier for the Wild Things, but Dunn pitched his way out of a bases loaded jam to keep the deficit at 2-0. The Miners increased their lead to four runs in the bottom of the second when Martinez knotted a two-run double into the grass. Martinez paced Southern Illinois at the plate, going 2-3 with three RBI. The Wild Things were kept at bay until the top of the sixth inning when third baseman Carter Bell launched a long fly ball into right field that scored left fielder CJ Beatty, ending Carden’s shutout-bid. Washington right fielder Scott Kalamar cut the Miners lead in half later in the sixth when he plated off of a Southern llinois pass ball. Heading into the bottom of the sixth, it looked as if the tides had turned at Rent One Park. On the defensive side, the Wild Things kept the game tight. The infield backed up their bullpen with two impressive double plays in the fifth and sixth innings, and the momentum looked to be shifting in favor of the visitors Unfortunately for Washington, however, the Southern Illinois bullpen allowed just one hit after the two-run sixth, finalizing the score at 4-2 in favor of the Miners. Washington will have another crack at Southern Illinois when the two teams square off on Friday, July 25 for game two of their three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. Fans can listen to all the action with Randy Gore on WJPA 95.3 FM and/or follow live game updates on Twitter @washwildthings. -Ben Emminger, Intern
