After taking off two days of work, a four drive, a check in into a cheap hotel beneath an underpass, and a meal and beers at a dive pub I got to see my favorite band for the first time in nearly 5 years. Let me say, they did not disappoint! Ive never heard of Springfield in virginia, but Im proud to say I was part of that phenomenal crowd. These guys have been playing music for nearly my entire life, and they still bring an unrivaled energy to the stage. Thank you Dark Tranquillity for traveling 4,000 miles to bring us your lifes passion, we truly appreciate it. Thank you Insomnium and the other opening acts, you guys were great! Getting crammed shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of other black clad metal fans singing (and by singing I mean screaming at the top of our lungs so that the Mikael Stanne would let us be the vocals for the music) along with every song was exactly what I needed. My favorite song is The Mundane and the Magic. To me its a song about the ups and downs of life, the uplifting light and harsh darkness of reality. Its a story of a cynical man who has been stuck in the grip of negativity and is coming to see the beauty and the magic in this world. Its a rather obscure song that Dark Tranquillity recorded 8 years ago. I dont think its one of their most popular songs, it requires a female vocalist that they dont actually have, and I never in my wildest dreams thought I would hear them play it live. One of the supporting acts had a female member and they brought her out and played it. At times over the years Ive felt the part of the cynical man, only seeing the darkness. Sometimes I need a reminder to stop seeing half empty glasses. It seems fitting going so far out of the way seeking joy that this is what Im rewarded with. The magic is all around us if we simply open our eyes, our minds, and our hearts and look for it. Heres the first little bit of that song before I had to turn the camera off and sing (scream) along. Good night!
