After the English civil war, when theaters were closed down, Shakespeare was banned and Macbeth was one of the only plays that was allowed to be performed. It was used as a morality play about the evils of women and Lady Macbeth is this Eve-like temptress. That interpretation has stayed with the play. But Shakespeare was far too brilliant of a writer to write characters who were so two-dimensional. If they were just evil, you wouldnt care. Alex Kingston
