After the coldest winter since 1935 many people are asking me about the winter long range forecasts. Odds still favor an El Niño forming by mid to late fall, with a 60-70% chance of development. El Nino is a pattern in the Pacific Ocean that affects weather in the United States. The most notable impacts in the winter months are because the wind patterns are the strongest. When El Nino is present, it provides some predictable effects that occur typically but not every time. The polar jet stream pushes farther north across Canada which means that the upper Midwest can be warmer than normal, with drier-than-normal conditions across the Great Lakes toward the Ohio River Valley, and with less snow than usual and reduced ice cover. The long range forecasts for the next 6 months all go along with these predictions.
