After the last few months, I had been working on my time travel skills. I wanted to travel to a future place where I felt consistently safe, loved, free and my children were free to move in their beautifully melaninated divine skin without hesitation, fear or concern at night, during the day around the corner---everywhere. I wanted to time travel back to my childhood in P.G. County and sit in Toni Wilson driveway and watch the beautiful Black boys in our neighborhood play football and then invite us in to run foot races and create makeshift bike ramps with them in the middle of the street. Ive been wanting that so badly and then this morning I awoke missing my mother and the rest of the day was tinged with sadness. But tonight, oh tonight! I time traveled to a delicious world of spectacular Blackness! The School Winter Gala! YESSSS! These beautiful Black and Brown babies PERFORMED! There was oration, Bible verses, skits, interpretative dance and a grand finale where all the children danced together (Cant you just hear Can You Feel a Brand New Day.... from the Wiz?!! I CAN!). They were dressed to the nines and you saw multiple generations of Black folks in the fellowship hall of a historic Black church celebrating life! Mothers, Fathers, Grandparents, sisters and brothers in their best holiday fare (yes, there was fur involved and you saw my shoes, right?) Celebrating the brilliant magical lives of these beautiful Black babies. Every detail baptized me back into my Blackness with so much joy that I cried. I needed revival, I needed their magic, I needed to time travel. Tonight was a good night and we affirmed #BlackLivesMatter with our resilience practice of celebration!
