After the morning earthquake yesterday..(Not many times you can - TopicsExpress

After the morning earthquake yesterday..(Not many times you can being a post with that!) Roddy Galbraith and I spent most of the day in zone 3 of Guatemala City. This is the zone with the worst poverty and crime. My awareness tells me as long as there is life there is hope and yet I could not help but feel a sense of hopelessness for the children we saw. Ive done my time in high crime, low income areas when I patrolled with the Guardian Angels. Ive traveled to many cities around the world as a speaker, and I have to say, this area has the most need for change. We toured the neighborhood and school with an amazing young guy who is taking a stand and trying to build a center for the children to go to. A place safe from the gangs, drug dealers, and disease that is their environment. Keep him and these children in your prayers. Today we take a helicopter flight out to one of the villages. We met with an organization that already has programs in place and a school built that serves 170 kids every day. They feed, clothe, educate and take care of their medical needs. They now need a stand alone medical clinic. Sharing a school room and a medical exam room just no longer works. If they can get the medical building built, they will be able to have more room, so more children attend the school. They also have an amazing feeding program that focuses on pregnant women and their childs nutrition for the first 5 years. I did not know just how important basic nutrition is to the development of the brain. One of the challenges they face with the older children is the learning disabilities that are a result of malnutrition early in life. Thanks for the prayers. Pictures to be posted soon!
