After the power to my neighborhood was restored, I noticed the service entrance cable leads on the vacated rental house next door had been hit by a tree limb, and pulled the meter loop loose from the back wall. The wires and the meter loop were laying on the ground, so I told some of the kids that were out playing in the area to make sure they stayed away from it till I could get the power company out to get it off the ground. Then I went in the house and called Entergy to report it. The person I talked to on the phone said she would get someone right out to check it. Didnt happen. This morning, I called back and talked to someone else, and told him no one showed up. About 3:30 this afternoon I hear a power company truck backing into the yard, so I go outside and stand at the drivers door thinking he would acknowledge my presence. He didnt. After a couple of minutes he gets out of the truck, and still doesnt look up. So, I said, Is the line hot? Without looking up, he says, Yep, that could kill you. so, I said, Well, I reported it yesterday, and nobody came, so I called again this morning. Then he decided he would look at me, and said, Well...you do know what happened around here, dont you? I suppose he meant, Weve been a little busy. Since Ive been working on my patience and over-reactionism, I just gritted my teeth, turned around and walked back in the house while he did his job. Now, Im mad at myself for not asking him a few rhetorical questions like the one he asked me. You know, like, Do you know the meaning of the word, priority, and if you do, do you think the lives of children might oughta be one? Or, Do you think it mightve been a good idea to have someone drive around and look for downed lines before the power was put back in the neighborhood? Or, Did your Daddy ever teach you anything about social inter-action, or common decency? Or, do you know how dangerous old men who are too old to fight can be? Or, Could I offer you a cold glass of tea?
