After years of trying, Julia and I finally made it to the Pearl Topiary Garden in Bishipville, SC yesterday and met Mr. Pearl, who created it and continues to work on it. He and the garden were delightful. He began this decades ago as a response to the racism of his white neighborhs who didnt believe a black man would maintain his yard properly in what had been a segregated neighborhood. All that is long forgotten now and hes celebrated througout the world. Nearly everything in this garden is cast off of discarded, including the plants which he salvages from the garden bins of garden centers.
