Age of scoundrels! Cynically may be, let me call these times - TopicsExpress

Age of scoundrels! Cynically may be, let me call these times of our state and society the age of scoundrels!! Shouldnt I say so? Then what else one should say when one sees that to be law-abiding and ethical is veritably a luxury that only fools or fatalists can afford in this country. When one sees that on the one hand the law-abiding common men are destined at worst to live a life of utter servility, misery or ignominy; or at best die of a terrorists bullet, tribal feud, or even a fatal bite of a killer mosquito. But on the other hand, if you are wealthy and resourceful (regardless of the nature and mode of earning) you are respected, feared and even venerated in the society. No policeman, taxman or state functionary will dare mess with you. And that makes it the age of scoundrel because being a scoundrel is rather fashionable ( and even rational, if you look at the range and variety of scoundrels). It is common that the ex-law-abiding citizens, those who have been beaten black and blue by the pro-scoundrel system, will avidly advise you to be a good scoundrel, and they would equate good scoundrelwith being a smart, sublime and successful scoundrel! No wonder, cheating, fraud, corruption are willingly condoned by our educated and elitist circles, lip service to the contrary, aside. So much so that even if you kill someone for venal reasons, its not a big deal unless you are a good scoundrel. So shouldnt we all raise a toast to this age of scoundrels? An age that has been glorified by a sizable number of our rather great scoundrels now increasingly infesting our so called educated, business, landed bureaucratic, professional and political classes. The central tenet of their life is---make hay while the sun shines--and this truism is catching fast on the hapless public minds ( those who are no more able to hold on to law and ethic) I am sure the way it is, the Oxford lexiconists will add more nomenclature from the various shades of scoundrels that adorn our Public ( and now Private) spaces!
