Ahead of the forthcoming general elections, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) said that it had put in place measures to protect corps members that would participate in the electoral activities. Speaking to journalists yesterday in Abuja after the opening ceremony of the 9th edition of the NYSC/ MDG’s War Against Poverty training for corps members, Director General of the scheme, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, said every modality has been put in place to protect lives of corps members before, during as well as after the elections. He noted that the scheme was collaborating with security agencies to protect their lives as well as other agencies to ensure that their welfare and logistics were taken care of. On the poverty eradication programme, Olawumi said the programme was created to empower youths to create their own businesses and eradicate poverty. He said since the inception of the programme in 2009, it had trained and empowered over 3,500 corps members. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Millennium Development Goals, Dr. Precious Gbenol, quoted the 2006 population and housing census, saying that about 31.7 percent of the total population were youths hence majority of the educated ones amongst them were unemployed as they sought for white collar jobs. She noted that it was important to reduce the increasing number of unemployed youths and poverty in the country by exposing those who had business ideas to technical and financial resources to enable them take necessary steps and set-up their own businesses.
