Ahead of the planned honour for recipients of the Nigerian National Merit Award for this year, President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday issued a stern warning against compromising the 34-year old awards. Jonathan spoke in Abuja during a lecture organised by the board of NNMA with the theme: “The Information and Communication Technology Revolution as a Platform for National Transformation.” The President, represented by the Minister of State of the Federal Capital Territory, Olajumoke Akinjide, said the annual awards must be given to recipients who have distinguished themselves in their various fields of endeavours. He said, “I congratulate the board of NNMA for their ability to organise this event for the past 34 years. For us to successfully implement the transformation agenda, we must imbibe the spirit of merit. NNMA represents excellence. It must never be compromised. It should only be given to deserving awardees.” Participants and governments at all levels were also urged to embrace the endless opportunities the ICT presents in contemporary society. The Chairman, NNMA Governing Board, Prof. Oluwafeyisola Adegoke, said the draft copy of the recommendations of the seminar would be formally presented to President Jonathan. Copyright PUNCH.
