Ironworkers in the 1600s would have worked 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, performing exhausting manual labor in intense heat around dangerous, loud machines that would have most certainly caused hearing loss. In an era before worker’s compensation, unions, or OSHA, if you didnt work you didnt get paid—regardless of any on-the-job injuries you had sustained. Something for all of us to consider and be thankful for how far we’ve come this holiday. (KT)
