Govardhan Parvat And The Importance Of Govardhan Parikrama Govardhan Parvat is situated at a distance of 25 kilometers from Mathura. It is a world’s famous place of pilgrimage for the Vaishnav’s. Here, the Goverdhan Parvat is the emblem of Lord Shri Krishna and is worshiped as Lord Krishna, himself. Thousands of devotees come here to circumambulate(Govardhan Parikrama) Giri raj Parvat (Govardhan Parvat) every year from all over the world. But, on every Full Moon, Purushottam Mass ( an additional month in Hindu Calendar like leap year of English Calendar), Guru Poornima, Shravan and Bhadrapad Mass (August – September month in English Calender), the Govardhan Parikrama is considered to be very sanctified & fruitful. Many devotees do the Govardhan Parikrama, with ‘Doodhadhari Parikrama’ (stream of milk falling on the path from a perforated container), which they carry all the way around the Goverdhan Parvat and some devotees do this by lying position known as ‘Dandavati Parikrama’. The Sacred Places of Govardhan. 1. Mansi Ganga : As the saying goes, Mansi Ganga was created as the water to bath by Lord Krishna showered from the sky. It covers a large area, just, in the heart of the city. On the day of Deepawali, the devotees light thousand of Diya’s (oil lamp made of baked clay) which float on Mansi Ganga presenting a spectacular sight. Thousand of devotees come here to enjoy the radiance of this memorable panorama. 2. GiriRaj Mukharbind : The sight of Shri Govardhan Maharaj (Govardhan Hill) is just 200 meters from the main track of Govardhan Parikrama (circumambulation). Devotees offer milk as Bhog (oblation) to the shrine and ancient deities of Yam (God of Death) & Kuber (God of Wealth) etc. are also placed here. 3. Chakreshwar Mahadev : This is a very primeval temple of Lord Shiva, situated in the north of Mansi Ganga. Maharaj Brij Nabh constructed the temple 500 years ago. This temple one of the oldest and sanctified places. 4. Mansa Devi Temple : This temple is located near Mansi Ganga and is as old as Mansi Ganga, itself. This idol emerged from the Giri Raj Shila (stone of Goverdhan Parvat), itself. This temple was palatial one earlier, but, it was constructed in ordinary manner after Aurangzeb destroyed it. History The Govardhan Parvat holds a momentous position, since, Shri Krishna’s childhood. When the Lord had been passing his youth at Gokul, he marked that the inhabitants of Braj were much afraid of Devraj Indra and all brijwasi perform many rituals to satisfy Indra. Indra is the God of rain, and if he becomes angry, there may be either flood or famine. Considering the situation, Lord Krishna persuaded all Brijwasi’s that they need not worship Indra anymore out of fear and perform their respective duties properly. No one can harm them, if, they did duties properly. As a result, all brijwasi followed the instructions of Krishna. Indra became furious and started a heavy downpour for seven days & nights, flawlessly. A horror wave permeated the entire Braj region. Lord Krishna lifted Goverdhan Parvat on his little finger and all the creatures of Braj gathered under Goverdhan Parvat and thus, Krishna saved them all from the wrath of Indra. Since, then, the next day of Deepawali is celebrated as the day of Shri Govardhan ji ceremony day. Ceremony A number of ceremonies are held in Govardhan during the whole year. But, especially, on the day next to Deepawali, the worship of Govardhan ji is done with full ritualistic performance. Govardhan Parvat is decorated pompously and Chappan Bhog (56 types of oblations) is offered to the Lord. This day is also termed as ‘Ann-Koot’ or ‘Govardhan Pooja’. A variety of food items are kept in the form of Govardhan hill before God. People from all over the world gather here to do Darshan of this ceremony. RADHE RADHE When we understand our relationship with God then we all will be happy. It is an essential factor for establishing peace in the world. All happiness in the material world has a beginning and an end, but happiness in Krishna is unlimited, and there is no end. Please accept my humble obeisances All glories to Srila Gurudeva ...
