Ahh ... I was just wondering wont it be something if I could be just reduced to pure senses and a mind. No aches, no pains, no physical efforts. Just me, my hedonism, and my flights of fancy. Just then I stumbled upon this paper. It talks about the possibility of a transplant of a head to a new body, or do we say, a new body to the head. I am not qualified to judge the scientific robustness of the assertions in it but the idea is fascinating. I am reminded of my fantasy during the days when I used to be contemplating different ways of elevating operative gynecology to a new level. I had worked out all the details of how a uterus transplant could be performed, at least all the important physical connections, including the arteries, veins and the structural support. I never had the courage to put the idea in practice, nor to attempt publishing it. Trust me, back in the days, no one else was thinking about it (or at most were in the same stage as me, ie, pure fancy). I am also reminded of the play Hayavadana by Girish Karnad, in which two of characters had their heads switched. One was a brainy, intellectual guy with a scrawny physique, the other a handsome beast but a dimwit. One would think that the one who ended up with the great body and brains would have the best of both worlds. However, in the end, the brawny body belonging to the brainy head became feeble and unattractive, just like the original body on which the head had lived before. So was the case with the dimwits head on the unattractive body; it turned into an impressive specimen of muscularity. Scientific inference from a fictional tale: head exchange transplant is a zero-sum game. Anyway, if singularity is not around by the time this machine, that I know as my body, creaks to a stop, I am counting on such crazy experiments to succeed. Then with a body transplant every 20-30 years or so, I could be around for a millenium. Arent you glad? Can I take something resembling Vin Diesel for my next one please?
