Ahh the highs and lows of Wisconsins 9 day gun deer season. Opening day my great niece Morgan Gilbert and great nephew Seth William Gilbert killed thier first deer ever. What a high. Both making excellant 1 shot kills from the same stand just 8 hours apart. I am a proud uncle for sure. Their dad Shawn missed a doe at around 4pm. At around 830am I dropped my rifle on the scope! Low points! Damn my luck. My 4 yr old grandson Brayden and 2 yr old granddaughter Amelia got to experiance the Raindeer with their dad Jake Friend, and got to spend alot of time with grandma Louan Friend. Saturday evening we took care of the deer, had dinner as a family at the Portage Pizza Ranch and visited grandpa at the Heritage House. He was pleased with all of the company and the deer stories. Awesome high points! Sunday brought warmer temps and RAIN! After I made a slow walk across the big marsh hoping to push a deer to one of the kids to no avail they all headed to home in Portage and Rice Lake in the afternoon. My morning walk included a snap shot and miss on a doe by me. What a low! Monday brought more rain until it changed to snow in the mid afternoon. Well with wind blowing and snow falling I headed out to the same stand that Morgan and Seth had success from on Saturday. I saw 3 does at about 330pm, and then at 420pm a beautiful buck was in my sights at 75 yards. I squeezed the trigger and watched him disappear back into the woods where he came from. After checking for blood both last night and again today I must admit that I just plain missed! A major low! This was varified when I shot my rifle to check its zero by placing 3 shots into a bulleseye the size of a nickel. Well after swallowing my pride I headed back to the same stand this afternoon. At about 415pm a very large doe came into the picked corn field to feed. I watched her for 10 minutes and decided to shoot her, I made a clean 1 shot kill at 170 yards. She was a dry doe, so definately a good one to take out of the herd. I was again on a high for deer hunting! Tomorrow I will be spending the evening with Daniel Tanton who killed a nice buck today, Ron Wilbur Myers and Laura Henke Myers cutting and packaging our venison, definitely a high. I truly love this time of year with family and friends...6 more days!
