Ahhh, the joys of retirement! I woke up on purpose this morning at 2 AM to watch the lunar eclipse. Set up a lawn chair in the back yard and enjoyed the cool clear fall sky. Sitting out there with a pair of binoculars and a cup of coffee was great. Watching the moon slowly go behind the shadow of the earth really made the moon look a lot more three dimensional and not just a bright disc of light. It really did look like a big marble in the sky slowly moving into the shadow of the bigger marble that we live on. As the eyes became adjusted to the dark, the stars became brighter and more plentiful. Carl Sagan was right ...there are billions and billions of them. The sky was clear enough that the Milky Way was visible. So nice to live in a part of the country where you can easily spot the Milky Way on a clear night. Life is good.
