"Airport Metro Express line may become part of Alwar link" NEW DELHI: Airport Metro Express line may be converted aspart of the regional rail transit system (RRTS) corridor from Delhi to Alwar. The urban development ministry has asked the consultant preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for this stretch to consider this as an option. Multiple sources confirmed to TOI that the option was very much under consideration for various reasons including the proposal to fast track the ambitious RRTS project. The first major reason behind this proposal is to make the 22.7 km of airport express line viable. Though Delhi Metro rail Corporation (DMRC) is presently running trains on this stretch after taking over the project from the erstwhile private player, it has been facing huge operational losses. Sources said that while the monthly earning on this line is around Rs 3 crore, the expenditure is around Rs 7 crore. "Since the proposed RRTS to Alwar will pass via Gurgaon and Rewari, as an option the airport line can be extended," said a source. He added that increased number of passengers due to the extension can improve the viability of the line. Moreover, optimum utilization of real estate component can bring more revenue. Even the UD ministry is considering the model of real estate exploitation to make RRTSfinancially viable on the three priority stretches. The proposed RRTS will have high speed air-conditioned trains on the lines of Delhi Metro. Moreover, since trains on these lines will be for long distance thestations would be at a longer gap. The 27.7 km airport Metro line has only six stations. The other reason behind such a proposition to include the express line in the proposed 180 km Delhi-Rewari line is to neutralize objection of Delhi government to allow RRTS corridors to terminate at the heart of the city. Airport express line takes off from New Delhi railway station. While UD ministry has been pushing the proposal to bring allthe first three priority RRTS corridors to the heart of the capital, Delhi government has been opposing this move. Delhi government is of the view that the trains should terminate at outskirts.
