Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Thulani Serero has released a statement - TopicsExpress

Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Thulani Serero has released a statement after being left out of Bafana Bafanas trip to Equatorial Guinea South Africa coach Shakes Mashaba didnt select Serero in his final 23-man squad that will participate in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations from January 17. It was a shock decision that surprised the media and pundits as the Ajax player is the most high profile player in South African football, having excellent Uefa Champions League experience. At the age of 24, one would think hed be an ideal type of player that Safa would have in mind to build their team with in future. Serero reacted to his exclusion with the following statement on the Ajax Amsterdam official website. I am very sorry that I was not selected. The African Nations Cup is a special tournament and Id liked to have played for my country. Perhaps, most perplexing is Mashabas statement that South Africa has better players than Serero. One has to conclude that Mashaba believes European scouts and analysts are wrong with the way the likes of Dean Furman cannot progress to Premier League level, yet is a central figure in the Bafana Bafana setup, while important players in top flight Dutch football Kamohelo Mokotjo and Serero are not even part of a top 23 squad. At a time when South Africa doesnt even have any star players in Europe, its surprising that the few other players who are making their mark in Europe, are deemed not good enough for South Africa. Serero revealed that he can at least look forward to his clubs upcoming campaign. Now I will flip the switch and focus entirely on Ajax. There are a number of important contests after the winter break and I will give my full focus. It has taken time for Serero to show his best for Bafana Bafana, but he was just starting to make his mark in the Afcon qualifiers, and common sense may dictate that the more he plays for the country and gels with his teammates, then the faster he would adapt to international football. Nevertheless, by missing out on the 2015 Afcon squad, one has to wonder what role Serero will have in Mashabas plans for the future and Safas vision toward 2022.
