Akhilesh wants eight-laned NH-24 . In December, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had knocked on the doors of the Central government on the issue of NH-24 widening and sought Rs. 350 crore for the project. Addressing a letter to the prime minister and the road and surface transport ministry, Yadav demanded that the stretch between the Ghaziabad-Delhi border and Dasna to be made eight-lane, instead of six-lane as per the original proposal. He attributed his demand to the fact that a large number of residential and commercial projects are coming up along the highway. “There was the proposal to convert NH-24 (Delhi-Dasna-Hapur) from four to six-lane. But as there is a lot of congestion on the road and due to the growing traffic, even a six-lane highway will not solve the purpose. Therefore, the proposed six lanes should be changed to eight lanes. It will help commuters of Delhi and other neighbouring states. The cost of project can be estimated around Rs. 350 crore,” read Yadav’s letter. The 22-km four-lane stretch is one of the most congested national highway corridors in the country.
