Al Izziddin Beirut; 1974 - The Holiday Inn, seen here rising behind its proud builder, Abdal Mohsen Kattan, with the panel of its theatre cinema showing the film The Tamarind Seed an American-British romantic drama film written and directed by Blake Edwards and starring Julie Andrews and Omar Sharif. Unfortunately after one year in 1975, it become the scene of vicious fighting in the civil war and is still in its ruined form. The Holiday Inn of downtown Beirut, was planned between 1965 and the early 1970’s; at that time, architecture in Lebanon was experiencing a new turn in its styles and techniques. It was then built between 1971 and 1974 with its 26 floors and designed by French architect André Wogenscky and his Lebanese collaborator Maurice Hindié. It belongs to a joint-stocks company called the St-Charles, the majority of which belongs to a Kuwaiti owner. In fact, the St. Charles theatre cinema, was listed by Variety magazine as being the most luxurious and modern cinema in the world.
