Al Sargis posts about military matters from the perspective of a very well informed well read and experienced vet and peace activist. Often something Id not have known or thought to ask. Als list is mArmilist at yahoo lists Marmilist Moderators Addendum: I should have added a comment for those not so familiar with why I think the sending of a conventional U.S. military unit on African missions is a dangerous new approach. The reason is that the 1st Infantry Brigade is composed of tanks, light and heavy artillery and mechanized infantry, all of which are absent in Special Operations Forces units that prowl the 3rd World. That is why it represents a conventional war strategy which means bigger and more sustained operations, even if initially subunits from the Brigade are sent on missions to various African countries. Mission creep in such situations has more often than not led to U.S.wars such as against Vietnam and Afghanistan. Note also that the article mentions rebels as the opponents. These vary from reactionary Islamic fundamentalists to those opposing foreign oil corporations polluting the Nigerian Delta and creating horrid conditions for oil workers and their families. After failure in seeking legal redress some of the latter have resorted to armed struggle...a sure alert for President Obama to send U.S. military forces to help local troops quell opposition to U.S. and Nigerian oil companies practices. Stay tuned, or better yet rise up against sending U.S. troops to Africa.
