We had a company do the sound mix for our movie, The Primary Instinct, and I had a chance to listen to their first pass today. I put the audio file on my smartphone and listened to the whole movie (audio only) on the bus ride home. It was excellent. Many digital artifacts and plosive sounds had been removed expertly. I was really impressed with what they were able to accomplish. As Stephen Tobolowsky got to the end of the story he tells in the film, tears came to my eyes. Even though Ive heard his performance dozens of times by now, it still never fails to move me. But I think I was also just in a state of complete emotional exhaustion from the film. There has rarely been a moment in the past 6 months when some component of it (financing, shooting, editing, submitting it to film festivals) hasnt been a part of my thoughts. And hearing the sound mix, which is really one of the final pieces to lock in before we reach the final cut, just made me realize: the end is in sight. This thing is going to be done soon. And soon, people will be able to see it and judge for themselves whether this enterprise was all worth it. And Im just really happy that the time is almost here for that.
