Alabama - High Cotton Its true Ive never cut cotton but Ive gardened plenty. My grandmother could do anything with a garden hoe. Lolololol How I long for those days today. I wonder what kids would think of my childhood. We had no Internet, wifi, very little social time. We thought we were doing great to get to go to the mall on Saturday night. Dad was a coal miner so things were lean for much of my life. As a matter of fact three of my favorite childhood memories were watching momma cross stitch ornaments for our Christmas tree. They are treasures that still hang on mine today. Dad was laid off and you could buy them for 33 cents a piece. We used to look the couch cushions in hopes of finding enough for a new one. My favorite Christmas was that year the tree was done in those and some red velvet bows we had. Mom was also ladies ministries president and we made Chicken and dressing dinners to pay the church payment. Every month at 2:30a.m. Shed get me up and wed head to church to start them. How I miss working with those ladies. The third dad was laid off yet again and I remember telling God in my 6 year old way I really wanted a hamburger. Lolololol We were eating mostly deer that dad was hunting and some things we had put away but it was deer every other day. To this day tenderloin is all I will eat because we ate so much of it. But I will never forget praying for a hamburger and YWEA had something at church where they were selling hamburgers. I wont ever forget sitting in that kit hen floor smelling deer roast and butter beans AGAIN when there was a knock on the back door. Only somebody we knew came to the back door. I will ever forget seeing David Clark standing there with a sack of hamburgers. Mom explained we didnt order any and he said well Daphne God told me to bring you a sack of hamburgers so I did what he told me. Lololololol That was still the best hamburger ever tasted. We did chores everyday , cleaned house everyday, eating out was unheard of and we thought we were special if we went to the store to get a Pepsi. Back then they were 35 cents a piece. We loved each other, respected each other, wore hand me downs and hand made clothes. I was 12 before I ever got a dress off the rack. I was so proud I told everybody I got a store bought dress for Easter that year. When school came that meant a layaway at wal mart and Aunt Dot would show up with bags of wonderful hand me downs her girls had outgrown. It was like two Christmases and shopping all in one. They couldnt leave before a prayer meeting would break out. Even us kids were told to grab a couch or a chair and hit our knees. Then theyd lay hands on us all before it was over. Lean but good times.
