Alan Holt 3 News Meteorologist talks storm surge as Hurricane Preparedness Week begins today: This week is hurricane preparedness week. One of the most hazardous part of a hurricane can be the storm surge. While this hazard is not considered in hurricane category ranking, it is the number one killer in hurricanes. Storm surge is an unusually high rise in the ocean level as a hurricane approaches a coastline. Winds pushing water against the coast cause waters to rise much above normal tide levels. The right front quadrant of a storm is the most dangerous section to be in with respect to storm surge. Thats because winds are circulating in a counter-clockwise fashion around the eye of the storm and its where water is being pushed against the coastline the most. What is the right front quadrant? Its dependent on the motion of the storm. If a storm were headed toward Corpus Christi directly from the East, the right front quadrant would be the leading portion of the northern half of the storm. One of the most useful maps for storm surge in Corpus Christi is the one in this post. It shows where water would reach, in feet, given a storm surge of a given height...in feet. So, if you live in a red area, those are the most prone to storm surge as it would only take a 4-6 foot storm surge to cover those areas with water. North Beach, the Oso Bay/Creek, Flour Bluff, and the Island are the most susceptible spots for storm surge in Corpus Christi. You can find this map in our hurricane guide, available starting June 1 at Wal-Mart, or by following the link below: srh.noaa.gov/crp/?n=stormsurge
