Speaking to journalists in Lagos, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Niger Delta Power Holding Company, Mr. James Olotu, identified the other three power stations to include Olorunsogo in Ogun State; Omotosho in Ondo State; and Sapele in Delta State. Olotu stated that the two units that came on stream at Alaoji Power Station had a capacity to generate about 250MW, adding that the remaining units would be delivered at the end of this year. “As we speak, total capacity of these new units is 1,150mw and each station will be delivering the remaining units into the grid, so that by December, we will be looking at 2,500MW. Now, the six remaining stations under construction are at 80 or 90 per cent completion stages,” he said. On efforts being made to address the gas supply challenges, Olotu said President Goodluck Jonathan held daily meetings with other relevant stakeholders to resolve these challenges. According to him, efforts had been put in place towards an integrated mechanism to deliver emergency gas to the new power stations. “This issue of gas is really problematic but at the highest level, the President; the Vice President; the Minister of Petroleum Resources; the Minister of Power; the International Oil Companies (IOCs) and other stakeholders sit together on a daily basis. When you know a problem, you have already solved 50 per cent of the problem. All efforts are being put in place towards an integrated mechanism to ensure that emergency gas is delivered between now and December, in order to ensure that any power station that is ready has gas,” he said. Olotu stated that he had received the commitment of the Aggregator Company of Nigeria that between 300million standard cubic feet per day of gas (mmscf/d) and 500mmscf/d would be available under the emergency period. He also stated that the gas that would be made available during the emergency period would be dedicated to the NPP power plants. “If we get that, I am sure and I believe them, we will get more power to the grid,” he added. Apart from Alaoji, works have also been completed in Omotosho; Sapele and Olorunsogo Power Stations. The 750mw-capacity Olorunsogo Phase 2, which is under the NIPP has four units of gas turbines and two units of steam turbines, each with a capacity of 120mw. By design, one unit of steam turbine in the NIPP plant is attached to two units of gas turbine. This implies that when gas is feed into two units of gas turbines to generate 240mw, the heat generated will automatically keep one unit of steam turbine running to generate additional 120mw.
