Alarming News: Men in the south east healthier for longer.. Residents in southern parts of England can expect to live healthily for much longer than those in the north, according to figures published yesterday. A clear north-south divide means that people in Richmond can remain fit and healthy for up to 15 years longer than those living in Manchester. People with the longest period of healthy life were found in wealthy parts of the capital and the south east region of England while those with the shortest were in the north. “For both males and females, the longest durations of healthy life were found in prosperous parts of London and the south east region. The shortest durations remained in deprived parts of the north east, north west and London,” the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. It added: “Tackling exposure to deprivation is therefore a key goal in reducing the health divide between the least and most advantaged areas, while continuing to bring about improvements for all.” Overall healthy life expectancy at birth in England, which is the number of years people are likely to live before ill health seriously affects their life, was 63.4 years for men and 64.1 for women. However, men are likely to spend a higher proportion of their life in good health compared with women, the ONS said. Dr John Middleton, vice-president of the UK Faculty of Public Health, said that little had changed over the years in the north-south divide but that now the difference is clearly seen in official statistics and not just academic studies.
