Miller] Steve Miller Band will always hold a special place in my heart. Not only did they perform at the first concert I ever attended, they also made two of the the three albums I ever purchased on vinyl. One was their ninth album, Fly Like An Eagle. The other was this one, Book Of Dreams, Eagles successful follow-up album. Personally, even though this album is largely made of songs that went unused for Fly Like An Eagle, I prefer this album (though the professional critics might disagree with me). As you might expect, this album continues and expands many themes present in Steve Miller Bands earlier work. Blues rock remains a huge influence, especially on lyrics of otherwise not-so-bluesy songs, such as Jet Airliner. They also continue the practice of leading in with shorter tracks that serve as instrumental intros to other songs (see Threshold and Electro Lux Imbroglio). But Book Of Dreams has can stand on its own too. It is maybe its most ethereal release since some of its lesser known albums in the late sixties, while also holding on to the groovy bass lines that first made the band popular on its eighth album, The Joker. Its cover also features the first appearance of a Pegasus, which would go on to become the iconic main mascot and symbol of the band. All this combined makes this, in my opinion, the quintessential Steve Miller Band album. At the end of the day, its just an altogether enjoyable record.
