Albuquerque’s municipal election is Oct. 8, but voting at remote early voting sites started Wednesday. The Albuquerque Journal endorses Ike Benton! District 2 – Isaac Benton Isaac Benton is often a voice of reason and compromise on a supposedly nonpartisan City Council that frequently splits along party lines. Benton, an architect and contractor with extensive experience in planning and public works, is a proponent of restoring the city’s oldest neighborhoods and honoring the rural interests of the North Valley portion of the newly drawn district he now lives in. He currently represents District 3, but redistricting placed his Country Club area home in District 2. He says he now seeks to represent District 2 because there are exceptional needs in some poor areas that aren’t being met and projects he would like to see completed, such as improvements along Central Avenue from Downtown to Rio Grande to encourage pedestrian and bicycle use. Benton’s highest priorities are job creation and improving public safety. He wants the Rio Grande bosque, which he says already is accessible to the public, to remain protected and undeveloped. Benton called for further study on a proposed roundabout at Candelaria and Rio Grande, saying a roundabout should only be part of a larger corridor plan. He sponsored an electronic sign ordinance that balances the needs of businesses with concerns about brightness and distraction and opposes Mayor Richard Berry’s proposal to allow neon signs along Central. Benton has represented his former District 3 well, and the Journal believes he will continue to do so in the new District 2. The Journal endorses Isaac Benton for the District 2 City Council seat.
