Ale Mail! Thanks to all who came along for Wednesdays Meet the Brewer with Pete Hills from Hackney Brewery. Everybody seemed to enjoy the night, including Pete himself. One thing that did emerge this week is that we passed our 100th different real ale of the year. We held celebrations for this the last two years (at the end of July and beginning of December), but it was so much earlier this year it came and went without us noticing. Another useless fact to emerge is that the 345 different real ales weve had since 1 January 2012 have come from 114 different brewers. Before getting to whats on the bar, and what is coming up, other forthcoming real events are (evening events are 8pm with an earlier than usual 7pm opening): 18 June - presentation of Beer of the Festival Certificate to Gary Lucas from Kissingate Brewery, we should have Gardenia and Rosa Black (our collaboration brew with Kissingate) on that night, as well as other fine beers... 16 July - Meet the Brewer. Hastings Brewery. Hastings are a vegan brewery and a firm favourite at the club. The planned beer list for that night is here. Note that all of these beers, both from Hastings and from Clarkshaws in Dulwich, are unfined with no fish guts in them (so they are vegan). The more highly hopped beers such as the Handmade 17 and the Dragon Slayer will have a hop haze to them! Hastings Handmade 17 Citra and Cascade 3.7% Session Pale Ale. £2.40 Hastings Best 4.1% A tasty traditional Best Bitter, made with classic English hops. East Kent Goldings lend a pleasing fruitiness; Fuggles an earthy bitterness. A good solid ale, nicely done.£2.70 Hastings Porter 4.5% A lovely dark beer that’s on the lighter side of the porter style. All the flavours are there – chocolate, liquorice, deep-roasted coffee – but without the heaviness that normally confines darker beers to chilly winter nights. Silver Supreme Champion, SIBA National Beer Competition 2014.£2.70 Clarkshaws Dragon Slayer 4.9%. An amber beer heavily dry hopped with Boadicea and has floral and marmalade notes. Locale. £2.70 Hastings Handmade 16 Ella/Green Bullet Black IPA 5.4% De-husked black malt give the beers a deep, rich black colour, but without most of the toasted beer flavours. Expect big hop flavours with a surprisingly subtle chocolate and liquorice finish. Antipodean hops: Australian Ella hops and New Zealand Green Bullet. Apricot, peach, pine, spice and raisin – finished by chocolate and liquorice. £3.00 Friday, 22 August - Saturday, 23 August Beer and Cider Festival. Our August Bank Holiday festival moves from being one day on the Monday to two days over Friday/Saturday. Expect the usual mix. 25 to 30 great real ales. Cider and perry. Barbecue. Live music. And hopefully a sunny garden. Our usual formula of entry by pre-purchased ticket which is pre-payment for 2 pints, there is no entry charge! Flat pricing (probably £2.70 a pint).
