Alice Coachman was the first black woman to win gold in the Olympics. The year was 1948. At her event in her hometown of Albany, Georgia, the audience was separated by race, she had to leave out a side door, AND THE MAYOR REFUSED TO SHAKE HER HAND! You may wonder, why are you bringing up these old wounds Sturge? Heres why- I agree with Neely Fuller, who stated If you do not understand White Supremacy (Racism)-what it is, and how it works-everything else that you understand will only confuse you. These behavior patterns (racism) is chronic, unrelenting, and always, ALWAYS seeks to JUSTIFIY ITSELF. I believe it is critically important to recognize that all conversation heretofore accusing black men murdered by police and others, the perpetrators whom never see jail time, must be seen, as was the case with the mayors behavior in the story above, as A CONTINUATION OF THE INJUSTICE THAT IS AT THE HEART OF WHITE supremacy / racism. When people need to justify your death (Eric Garner) after a coroner ruled it a homicide, as BEING CAUSED BY PRE - EXISTING HEALTH PROBLEMS you are dealing with a system that will mass murder you, and your children, THEN OFFER EXCUSES JUSTIFYING WHY YOU DESERVED TO DIE. This sentiment is VERY, VERY DANGEROUS!
