Alie Kabba brings a wealth of leadership experience to position SLPW in the forefront of public policy advocacy in Sierra Leone Sierra Leone Policy Watch is proud to announce that Alie Kabba, executive director of United African Organization, will serve as Chairman of our interim board. “We are very pleased to have a visionary leader with a proven track record of policy advocacy and legislative victories to empower diverse communities in the US,” said Bobby Gboyor, SLPW Board Secretary. “Alie Kabba understands our core mission and what it takes to strengthen our capacity to offer credible solutions to intractable public policy issues facing Sierra Leone at the moment.” “The new chairman is a strategic thinker and activist who will make significant contribution to SLPW in building an engaged constituency and mobilizing public support for our Diaspora Voting Rights and other important policy priorities,” said Jesmed F. Suma, Executive Director of SLPW. Alie Kabba is currently the executive director of the United African Organization (UAO), which is a dynamic coalition of African community-based associations that promotes social and economic justice, civic participation and empowerment of African immigrants and refugees in Illinois. A native of Sierra Leone, Alie is a lifelong community organizer and advocate for social justice. Under his leadership, the UAO has become a highly visible and respected African-led coalition with a strategic focus on grassroots organizing, leadership development, and public policy advocacy in the US. He is the first African to be elected Board President of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, which is dedicated to promoting the rights of immigrants and refugees to full and equal participation in the civic, cultural, social and political life of Illinois. He serves as Chairman of the Golden Door Coalition, which is committed to the resettlement of refugees with dignity and the support necessary to thrive in the US. In his role as board member of CAN-TV, Alie Kabba’s efforts to give voice to issues affecting diverse communities in Chicago has propelled him to the forefront of shaping important dialogues and initiatives to make CAN-TV an invaluable public television resource in Chicago. In recognition of his leadership role in multiple civic arenas, Alie Kabba was recently named among the top 100 black leaders in the US. “I am humbled and honoured by the decision to choose me as the chairman.” said Alie Kabba. “I will work very hard to elevate the mission of SLPW and provide strong leadership at a time when there is tremendous need to fill the policy vacuum in our national discourse today.” Sierra Leone Policy Watch is an independent, nonprofit public policy think tank that helps to improve policy and decision making through research and analysis.
