Alkali: Weve lost one of Bornos priceless national assets - Governor Shettima Governor Kashim Shettima received news about the death of Professor Mohammed Nur Alkali with very rude shock even though with submission to Allahs decree that every life must taste death. Governor Shettima was completely taken off guard following the death of someone he regards as one of Bornos priceless national assets and eternal treasures whose demise came at a time his extra-ordinary knowledge and depth of wisdom were much needed given the challenges of security facing Borno State, for which the late Professor contributed in many ways, trying to address through thoroughly researched and well articulated positions at several forums and publications. The Governor feels the pains of Professor Alkalis death not just for his works but also from a personal point of view. As a muslim I live with the believe that death can come calling at every point in time but this is one death that is really heavy for us as a Government and people and for me personally. He was one of those that was really worried by our challenges. He was always undertaking research works at his own cost, making presentations and publications all geared towards finding solution to our problems. At the States academic level, Professor Alkali it was who laid the ground works for the establishment of Borno State University which is currently having series of infrastructural developemnt going on at the permanent site of the University, in Maiduguri the State capital. This is not to mention his overwhelming contributions at the Federal Government owned University of Maiduguri where he was a Vice Chancellor in the good records of the University. Professor was one of Bornos showcase assets at the National level. He was a regular feature at many points the State had to present highly respected academics for national assignments that demanded Federal character representation. The death of Professor Alkali is no doubt a very big blow on the academic and many spheres of Borno State. The Professor has bequeathed to us and our younger ones, his many documented works, teachings and character, all of which will for many years, make him a great subject of reference not just in the history of Borno State and its legends but also, he will remain a reference for many academics across Nigeria, Africa and indeed, many parts of the world. On personal ground, Professor Alkali it was, who got me admission into the University in 1985 for an undergraduate Degree. He was one of my academic mentors and a guardian per excellence. I have made a personal lost in his natural demise like I have made in the gruesome deaths of many other precious sons and daughters of Borno in the last couple of days, who unlike Professor, where murdered through unfortunate attacks. May Allah admit the Professor and all other innocent sons and daughters of Borno that died, into Aljanna firdaus and May He grant us lasting peace in Borno and Nigeria as a whole Governor Shettima was quoted to have said in a statement. Isa Gusau Special Adviser on Communications Government House, Maiduguri, Borno State.
