All UCETIANS must read this :) Universal College of Engineering & Technology (UCET), Moti Bhoyan Location: Universal College of Engineering & Technology (UCET) is located in a distant village called Moti Bhoyan about 24km from centre of Ahmedabad and 28km from Gandhinagar. The area is quite desolate and deserted and one needs to travel till Vadsar air force base to find some civilization. One might get in trouble if he/she ventures here alone late in the evening. Reaching here by public transport is quite cumbersome if not impossible. Only 2 AMTS buses ply here due to nearby location of Arvind Mills and their frequency is very poor. Hence most of the students coming from Ahmedabad prefer to travel by college bus. While those coming from Gandhinagar travel by a private bus service for UCET and nearby college students. Usually travelling takes up to 1 – 1.5 hours one way depending on where you stay. Whether you opt for college bus or private bus it’ll cost about 12 to 15 thousand rupees a year. About 30% of the students, especially final year students, travel by their private vehicles. Infrastructure: The campus of Universal College of Engg & Technology, although not huge, is sufficiently big and nicely spaced out. College building is currently under construction but academic activities aren’t hampered due to that. Classrooms are well ventilated and 2 seater benches are comfy to sit. Library is huge and has many reference books in multiple copies; but books by local author are hard to find. There is wi-fi in college campus but its password isn’t given to students. However internet connectivity is available in computer laboratories. Labs for other departments like mechanical and ECE aren’t as equipped as that of computer/IT yet. However management is in the process of procuring necessary equipment and apparatus. One thing that pinches students is the lack of sports facilities. There is a volleyball ground which is hardly used for its intended purpose. Theres also a Badminton court but no big playgrounds for cricket and football available. Also indoor sport equipment like Table Tennis is not present. College doesn’t provide hostels as yet but it has been heard that they are considering constructing a separate building for hostel which shall be common for Universal, Alpha and GIT colleges. Fees: Rs 43,000 per year Faculty: The faculty can be described as average. About 4 to 5 teachers out of 10 are really good in each department. The rest are average to below average. There used to be many fresher in the initial years of college but now they have either left the college or they are made to pursue masters. Computers and IT are said to be better departments in terms of faculty. Most of the staff is friendly and co-operative and they are known to give good grades in internals. Attendance: Neither extremely strict nor very easy, is the general policy administered by UCET for attendance. One can sail through with about 60% or more attendance. Defaulters need to face the wrath of teachers during vivas but no serious action is heard of been taken. However they make sure you attend classes by shutting the college gates, so that no one leaves before last lecture is over. Wiser students have found a loophole in this system - you can freely roam around in the campus even while you are bunking a lecture. Crowd: About 65% ‘Amdavadis’, 30% from Gandhinagar & Kalol combined and rest from other parts of Gujarat – that’s the demographics of students of UCET. Everyone’s friendly and warm over here and very good unity is also seen in crowd. Generally there are 20 to 25 girls in a class of 60. Overall the crowd is very sincere about academics and many nerds can be found here. Canteen: The canteen of Universal College is spacious and airy as it is not confined by walls on any side. It offers a variety of food items at affordable rates, Manchurian being the most popular of them is priced at 25 rupees. Hangouts: Canteen is the only hangout as people go there to chill during college. And they head straight to home due lack of any other place to hang out in the radius of 10 km. Festivals: A cultural festival in even semesters and a technical festival in odd semesters are celebrated here. Participation is in good numbers in tech fest due to enthusiasm shown by first and second year students. Also students from nearby colleges come to participate in events like LAN gaming and robotics. Cultural festivals get better overall response than technical. Placements: The college is very new and it has to work hard to earn a name among recruiters. Hardly any company had shown interest to recruit students of the pioneer batch. In fact students weren’t able to secure a job in pool placements too. Hence majority (about 40%) students have opted for further studies. Some students are found to accuse their placements officer as “lazy” and “un-resourceful”. So not much hopes are held for the coming few batches as well Verdict: Universal College of Engineering & Technology (UCET) is a very new college. It is advisable to give a few years’ time to develop and build a reputation to attract potential recruiters. As of now seniors studying here have a unanimous opinion that admission seekers should look for a better college if they can. Overall rating given by students is a five on ten (5/10).
