All day Ive been thinking about that poor kid that killed himself. And just now, on the way to the store to get my second bottle of wine, I thought of something. I bet a lot of parents read a story like that and say to themselves, Damn, maybe I shouldnt be so hard on my kid. Maybe I should let him have the run of the place and tell him constantly how special he is. This is wrong. It couldnt be more wrong. The balance between discipline and psychological health is simple. Lets say you have a 10-year-old son and hes in forth grade. He misbehaves at school and hes being an asshole at home, and you and your husband spank him. Hell, your husband even takes off the belt and gives him a couple of smacks on the ass. Theres a lot of psychological damage that takes place there, but yet the discipline is required. How do you, as parents, balance the equation? Its easy. Let a couple of hours go by. Your son has been in his room thinking about the whole thing, probably getting super pissed off at you, which is normal. Then, when hes getting ready for bed, go in there. Tell him, Son, what you did was wrong. You have to understand that what your father and I did was necessary. But, you should also know that were both very proud of you for taking your punishment like a man.
