All good from Brad as Steeldogs defeat Bison The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs took on the Basingstoke Bison in midweek action on Tuesday night. Sheffield were missing Sedlar, Chambers and Bell. They were also denied the services of Nottinghams Dan Green, so Brad Day again started in net. New import signing Mariusz Jakubik made his first appearance. The game started at a good pace with both sides creating pressure. Quality chances were in short supply and as with many recent games, it was a very evenly matched contest. The course of the game change with Andre Payette sitting two minutes for holding. The Dogs went on a high energy penalty kill with debutant Jakubik delivering a jarring check and then Korhorn nearly scoring on a breakaway. The increase in energy paid off as Payette joined the attack at the end of his penalty and scored at 14.26. The Bison came out fired up at the start of the 2nd period, with Rand jabbing the puck home to level on the first shift. This set the tone for the period. The visitors continued to press and some scrambling defence from Day and his team mates somehow kept the puck out before a counter attack strike from Korhorn put the Dogs ahead on a feed from Hirst. Hirst was really hitting top form and shortly after he deked and dangled and slid the puck under Skinns. Finding them selves two behind sparked an immediate response from Basingstoke and Melachrino skated in and fired over Days shoulder. Another one sided penalty call saw Elliott binned for slashing and within seconds Rand fired home a leveller. With 12 seconds left in the period, Duncombe and Haywood’s good work set up Jakubik for a debut goal. The final period was a tense affair with Basingstoke looking for an equaliser whilst Sheffield tried to find another goal to get some breathing room. Both net minders saw a lot of rubber but the only goal came with 3 seconds left as with Skinns pulled, Miller flicked the puck over a sprawling Day. Neither team could score in over time so it went to a penalty shoot out. Brad Day stood tall in the Dogs net and turned away all three Bison efforts, which made Jakubik’s beautifully worked back hander the decisive strike. Joe Greener was Man of the Match for Basingstoke, with Brad Day getting a thoroughly deserved award for Sheffield. The Steeldogs will look to build on this much improved performance this weekend when they play away versus the Lightning before a home game at iceSheffield on Sunday (5.30) against the Peterborough Phantoms.
