All good things come to an end, dont they? Much of the past 3 - TopicsExpress

All good things come to an end, dont they? Much of the past 3 weeks Ive been in California, except for two days in South Carolina and two days back home in Brooklyn. Last day here for a few weeks. Got serious marathon training miles to run today (I plan to run 12-15 miles later this morning), mad errands to run, and a dinner with my cousins out here (my mothers family tree is everywhere, spread around the country). This has been a very transformative experience for me in Cali, unlike any Ive had in 20plus years of coming to the West Coast. That is because of the work Ive been doing, the people Ive encountered, and even some of the, uh, interesting things folks back in New York City made me think of while away, both good and not so good. I will forever be in love with New York City, with Brooklyn, no question. But sometimes we simply need to get away to somewhere different, with a different way of taking on life. Yes, I sometimes smile to myself when crossing streets in Cali. I cross like a New Yorker: no cars means we just go. Out here they wait for the light to change, they press the button asking permission to cross, like for real. And having to drive most places has never been my thing. I miss walking and the subways, yo. New York has got to be the most convenient and accessible city on the planet, or at least one of them. You can have a car in the NY but you really do not need one. That I miss when away. And stuff being open all hours of the day or night. But the natural beauty of California is priceless, something that makes me very very very happy, more than ever. You simply cannot put a price tag on personal happiness as you get older, or on how nature can affect our spirits for the better, if we are open to that. We will see what happens on that tip down the line. The rest of this year is no joke work-wise: many exciting and very serious projects on the table, many things to do with BK Nation, our national organization, a book to finish, the Dylan Thomas Centennial I am a part of in NY, and our annual clothing drive in December for the homeless. And that little thing called the New York City Marathon I am running for the first time on Sunday, November 2nd. But work is what my moms taught me to do, and I am not even remotely complaining. Better to be doing and moving, always, than to be idle. I can hear my ma saying something like that this very moment—
