All is Lost (2013) Playing like an extended adaptation of a naturalistic short story, All is Lost is a dangerous gamble that somehow pays off; taking a well known actor, keep him alone on a boat, and give him next to nothing in dialogue. The actor in question is Robert Redford and that was a very smart choice as he has consistently shown that he is able to hold the screen in almost any type of performance. Our nameless protagonist wakes up one morning to find that a runaway shipping container has busted a hole in his yacht. Working quickly and without panic, he is able to mend the damage enough to sail. However, with his electronics on the fritz and several major storms coming his way, the resourceful man may have finally met his match. The movie is not carried by dialogue obviously but rather by the expressions of Redford and his determination to survive the worst that the sea has to offer. His moves are smart, resourceful ones, of someone who knows what he is doing. But even then, there is only so much a man can do before all hope for salvation can be lost. All is Lost is a well shot, well acted film, that does much with a minimalist idea. A film about the resourcefulness of the human spirit, it is not concerned with a clear cut answer. The question of whether The Man will live or die is irrelevant. What is important is that when the chips were down, he fought to the very end. “Kane” youtube/watch?v=Lk_R04LfUQU
