All kids need discipline, no ands its or buts ! Parenting is NOT about being a tyrant, or being commander in chief of dishing out punishment at your every whim. It is very important to set reasonable rules for the kid to follow, and what happens if the boundaries are broken. Give the kid a sensible reason for the rule, and explain why kids need to follow rules and give direction on how not to break/bend the rules. If punishment is needed, explain WHY , and reinforce the rules. No need to go slap happy all over the kids arse.
