All of the objections Ive seen to common core arithmetic practice - TopicsExpress

All of the objections Ive seen to common core arithmetic practice boil down to its not how we learned it. I have two thoughts about that. First, you can teach your method at home, if you want. However, unless you will be the only person who teaches your child, he will be required to learn and adapt to the teaching style and skill of the teacher in order to be successful. Second, how secure are you in your math skills? Care to race me in mental arithmetic? Ill warn you. I won national championships in high school based partly on that skill, and this technique of restating the problem in an easier to calculate way is crucial to that speed. So, maybe before criticizing a technique because it doesnt make sense to you, you should wonder whats missing from your mental tool chest. Maybe how you learned it wasnt a very good method of teaching. Maybe you should want better for your kids. Without context, its really easy to blame the teacher, the materials, and the people who put together the standard, but they are not the only parties that influenced this outcome. The child and parents played their part, too. Maybe if the parents were interested in learning and teaching the technique instead of mocking it on Facebook, their child would have understood how to apply it. Fighting your childs teacher is a sure fire recipe for his failure.
