All over India, around this time of the year--the beginning of autumn--we celebrate Navrathri. Its a festival of nine days and nights (hence nav nine rathri nights) for the three supreme goddesses. The first three days are dedicated to the goddess of power, Parvathi/Durga; the second three days to the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi; the third three to the goddess of learning, Saraswathi. At the end of Navrathri, you should, technically, be powerful, wealthy and wise :-) In southern India, we build odd-numbered steps within the house and display dolls and figures. (Its called golu.) I loved this festival as a child (I think all children love it)--its such an exercise in imagination. The dolls now are clay figurines of just about anything--a cricket field with players, a village, a train station, a vegetable seller, a temple procession, all in miniature. Here are two photos from my golu this year. Girls playing blind mans bluff. And, a field (mustard seeds planted on Sunday) with farmers. If youre celebrating navrathri and have golu set up at home, please share here--Id love to see!
