All right, all right!! Tomorrow is the end of my time in Afghanistan (at least for now). Tomorrow I fly to Dubai then catch a flight 12 hours later to the UK. Will spend a couple of months there with my brother and his lovely wife. They are saints for putting up with…I mean, putting me up for a bit. This is going to be a huge transition in so many ways. I have spent the last eight years working for, living with and teaching the US military in this part of the world that I somehow feel institutionalized. Not hard to feel that way since life in Iraq and Afghanistan was mostly inside the wire with bed, meals, mission and yard time determining my schedule. Gonna be different. No more extreme heat, extreme cold, extreme winds, extreme dust, or extremely close explosions and bullets. Eduardo Menendez, Eric Gunn, and Troy Buck were three of the best partners (and battle buddies) an old guy like me could have had in this environment.
