All the Shawnee Mission schools are giving the kids Macbooks. Had to try and connect the computer to the home network printer. Of course, HP cant do anything. Just says download with Apple Software Update. And Apples idea of help is no help at all. (Speaking as someone dedicated to Apple from 1985 - 1993.) So we stumble through useless and sparse web pages, launch a terminal and ping the printer, but there is no way to tell the mac what to do next. Except that as were poking around, the mac suddenly figures it out and downloads the correct driver. Things get set up properly and all is well. Except I DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED! How did it work? What did it do? What do I need to do if I face this again? Exactly the same issues I hated about Apple 20+ years ago. Apple wont let you mess with the system or peek behind the curtain. When it works, all is well. When it fails, all is screwed. Versus the Microsoft world, which I also despise, where you can mess with everything, but usually have to, because it wont just work by itself.
