All this talk about tamales from my friends Rito Lopez II and James Munoz got me to thinking about the first time I tried this wonderful food. It was not my proudest moment. Growing up I had existed on Filipino food and the occasional beefy midwestern fare when I visited grandmas. Up until I got my job at Hallmark my knowledge of Mexican food was Taco Bell.....(Can you already tell where this is going?) One day my friend Mary Valdivia asked if I wanted some tamales....I had no clue what she was talking about. YOUVE NEVER HAD TAMALES? Mary was beside herself. Ill bring you some tomorrow. True to her word, Mary brought me tamales.....and I tried them.... So, what did you think? she asked. Mary, I gotta be honest, that was some rough eating. What? Yeah, that was too much work -- Im not sure tamales are my thing. Mary gave me a strange look -- put her hands on her hips and asked, Did you peel the husk? ?????? Im sorry, what? Hahahahahaha.....you dumbass....you gotta peel the husk. Oh The second time I ate tamales went much better......Geez... Live and learn.....Live and learn. BTW -- I also learned that Mexican bread is very sweet and does not go well spaghetti......
