Allah tests His servants to show their patience and obedience. The more Allah loves someone, the harder the test is. Ibrahim, peace be upon him was “an intimate friend” of Allah. This honor was given only to two; Ibrahim and our Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon them. Scholars define “an intimate friend” as one whose heart is fully occupied with the one he loves. Both of their hearts were filled with the love of Allah. Allah tested Ibrahim with the most difficult test. After he reached a very old age and his son Ismael began to take care of him and his affairs, Allah ordered him to slaughter Ismael. He saw that in a dream and he knew that the dreams of Prophets are revelations. He told his son about what he had seen. Without any hesitations, he told his father: do as you are told and you will find me among the patient. No wonder Allah chose him later on to be a Prophet and a Messenger as well. He asked his father to slaughter him while his face was to the ground so that he would not look into his eyes. Ibrahim was up to the test and started slaughtering his son. However, Allah has made the knife dull and it wouldn’t cut. Ibrahim proved that his love for his was no match to his love for Allah. If Allah asked you to do the same, would you be up to the test? Allah ordered you much less than that. He ordered men to pray in the masjid and he ordered women to abide by the Hijab, yet rarely will you find those who do so. O Allah make us among those who love you more than anything else in the world.
