Almost Maine Freeport Players Production “Almost Maine” is a play that touches your funny bone and pierces your heart. It presents northern Maine and its people as “stand-ins” for all of us, as they uniquely parse their emotions and actions, showing their deep humanity. In writing Almost Maine, John Cariani has created an existential exploration of the paradox central to human emotions; that love and hurt are two sides of the same coin. In a series of vignettes the paradox is presented as the “absurd” challenge of life. With universally familiar emotions, the characters interact in situations both surreal and peculiar. The acting and directorial challenge of these scenes is to avoid turning the situations into farce, and the characters into caricatures. Freeport Players pulled this off wonderfully with heart and humor. The show runs on weekends through Sept 21st. If you are a fan of good acting and are ready to do a little laughing and bit of sighing plus some thinking, don’t miss it. Go to fcponline.org for more information.
