LEGEND | THE CREATION OF THE WORLD In 1893(Meanwhile, somewhere ELSE in the Pacific.. something ELSE happened early that year.. on January 17th..?), Paul Gauguin returned to France from his first journey to the Pacific. Upon his return, he composed an illustrated book about the ancient culture of the Polynesians. Entitled Noa Noa, it told the story of creation. Legend says that Noa (fragrance) was the first miracle of creation until Le Tagaloa, the supreme god, rolled gigantic stones from the heavens into the sea to form islands. Floating clouds then married the clear heavens to create offspring: shadow, daylight and sunset. The creatures of the land and sea eventually gave rise to humankind, and the chiefs were believed to be direct descendants of the gods. These decedents formed a secret society known as the Areoi and were believed to once reside on Bora Bora. Peace, Ché Free
